While D3 was a fun game, Path just feels like what D3 should have been. I can't really put my finger on it, but just feels like a spiritual successor to #2.

I'm not far into the game, but what really interests me is the passive skill tree and the way the abilities work. At first I was a bit intimidated/afraid of the damn thing, but then someone pointed out, "Hey man, it's like fuckin' D2. You choose something, you're stuck with it. Test shit out and have at it!". Though I've found you can respec a little with some "refund" points that work for single points. So while you can't respec fully, you can use some of the orbs (mentioned later) to re-allocate sections.

You can pretty much do just about anything with any character, but due to their position in the tree some are easier to get to.

Then comes the item and skill system. There's no gold, everything is a barter system with the orb/items that drop that allow you to reroll/reforge/customize items.

I've just now got to a place where I can have "linked" gem slots that allow me to start modifying my skills. Items can have links in their gems, and these gems (and their colors) dictate what skills you use and how you can modify them.

eg: I can have the spell "Fireball" in a gem slot, then there's numerous Support gems that can be socketed in to modify the base spell.

It can have multiple projectiles, it can travel faster, it can crit more, it can crit harder. All of these are gems that are slotted into the same item (Weapon, Chest, Anything if it has slots). But to get them to work, the gem slots have to be "linked".

So you're looking to get a chest drop with max links? Good luck, it can have up to 6 slots and links. Sometimes it'll spawn with 6 slots, but won't have the full 6 links.

So then comes the farming and customizing of said item. Get a drop? It doesn't quite have what you want? All right, let's try to forge. There's "Orbs" that allow you to attempt this. Remember Horadric Cube crafting and Chipped Gem magic rolling? It's like that but on steroids.

Here's a list of the different orbs and what they can attempt to do for your item as you gamble it: http://www.pathofexile.com/item-data/currency

One thing I'm not certain about are all the leagues and stuff. I think they're like the ladders, and I've not looked into them more. Someone else can probably shed some light on that. I've just been playing the default (Dominion?) ladder for now with some friends I think.

So... again. I'm not very far, but it has been pretty entertaining and I look forward to grinding up a bit more and then trying my own builds when I have a better feel and understanding of that passive tree.

The only real big thing that I hate about the game currently is the camera angle. For whatever reason it just feels awkward and too high of an angle. I'm coming to accept it the longer I play, but it still annoys me.

I'll let you know if something ever breaks the stride and causes me to stop.

Having played quite a bit of both PoE and d3, I prefer d3 /slightly/ (in the interest of fairness, probably 750h in d3, 100h in PoE). Both are very enjoyable.

Path of Exile has much much more diversity. Almost overwhelming diversity, the currency is a bit opaque, the skills are quite vast. The uniques are often really unique and one can build around. Pretty tight gameplay. I continue to enjoy PoE. But I get one-shot relatively often. Most the time I'm facerolling and then blammo, insta-gibbed. Also, HC and Nemesis promote lame insta-logout tactics.

D3 is much more about the slow buildup. The action is slower, and when fighting a boss you slowly realize there is no escape and that quite likely that death is the most likely option. This, imo, is what makes intensity in the game. I will say that d3 has essentially patched out the difficulty and is actually just straight up easy now (even on HC). Less diversity, quite a bit easier (especially after the patches).

Honestly, I like the difficulty of PoE, but dying to one-shots imo is just lame. I also don't enjoy the 'hey this is a difficult situation, log-out'.

Anyways, both are good games. Start playing PoE Ucross, I don't have any friends in Nemesis yet (well, race plays a bit).

I have a different perspective because I play softcore. I'm only lvl 50 in Path of Exile but I already feel like D3 is stale in comparison. I also have not played Diablo 3 in quite a while so I haven't experienced any new things they may have added since about 7 months ago?

I love the diversity you speak of dug. Especially how you can create a build around an items special effect. I didn't feel like I was doing that in Diablo 3, instead I was just piling on All Resists, HP and Armor for the most part. I'm sure things have changed though, but for now I prefer PoE over D3.
