i prefer WarThunder to the 'World of ....' games. Right now it's just planes but tanks are coming very soon...

Warthunder has 3 different flight models and modes.

Arcade, Historical, and REalistic.

Historic is a nice healthy mix IMO...

Do you play with arcade players when you're playing in the other flight models? Or is playing arcade a disadvantage?

You don't play against people with other flight models. So if you play arcade, it's like 10v10 and you can respawn in a different plane based on how many crews you ahve for that nation.

I mostly play historic, which are like real missions. One plane, you can run out of ammo which means you have to go back to base and land and more realistic flight models.

The Realistic battles require a pretty hefty slight stick type setup to be successful and you are limited to cockpit only.

So WarThunder is a first-person (or isometric) "I'm in the cockpit" type of game?

Thinking the World of series is 3rd person...?

Only mandatory in cockpit in Realistc mode.

In Arcade/Historic there is 3rd person (default), cockpit, virtual cockpit.

war thunder is pretty good. got kind of annoyed at it cuz arcade is a bit too easy, and cannons too OP (especially germans with gunpods), but historic was boring, no meaningful objectives because it's just basically 1-life team deathmatch, so becomes a climbing contest. Haven't played in 3-4 months though so maybe some patches have improved things.

I havent played world of warplanes but I heard it doesnt even have damage modelling, they just give planes HP bars?

Historical battles certainly have the climb + deathmatch feeling at times, but not always, and yes, arcade is really easy, but it's still fun for the most part (and that's why we play games right).

They are suppose to come out with some changes to historical to keep the climb and fight mechanic from being the end all be all soon... I'm anticipating them.

The reason climb + fight is pretty typical to aerial combat though... it's because you're trying to get position. The person on top usually wins a dog fight.

The problem is bombers start too far away from the bombing sites, so fighters have time to gain tons of altitude and still intercept bombers before they get to the first target. The change they are making is starting bombers closer so that fighters have to choose to climb for position and perhaps lose some objectives because bombers go there first, or head straight to objective to try to take out the bombers.

I like in arcade that ground objectives matter, so it adds a bunch of elements like light/medium bombers taking out tanks and pillboxes, and then fighters have to come down to defend them. I hear they even added heavy objectives for heavy bombers (beyond the airfield). Unfortunately you just get tired of the silly stuff of arcade, that firepower is so unbalanced, since there's no ammo constraints, and over-weaponed planes that should handle like hogs isn't too debilitating, so basically cannon spam rules.

In historical I like the more challenging physics that properly tone down overgunned hog planes, and lack of aim leader, but don't like that all objectives are just meaningless since the only thing that matters is killing (so BnZ climbers rule). Even spawning with a bomber is basically leeching.

I think some simple tweaks to historical could help a lot:
-spawn in air, closer to action, like in arcade. So there's less boring downtime, and also so the beginning isn't such a climbing contest to 5-6km.
-2 or 3 respawns instead of zero. So you can go after objectives without being a leecher who is crippling the team. It would add more of a back and forth dynamic that exists in arcade but not HB.

That's true, and fine for some people, but it's really not the most interesting gameplay to spend 15 minutes climbing up then be like oh gee that 190 is 2km above me, whelp auto-lose.

Anyway like I said you can fix it by making it so the 190 can still climb up, but he's useless 10km up watching the other team take out the tank column with light bombers when he's supposed to be defending. currently in warthunder historical battles with single death it's impossible to take out the map objectives because you can't bomb fast enough before a team of fighters kills all your planes.

No, you are right, it's mostly the same. The problem with historical other than what I mentioned which they say they are fixing in next patch (spawning closer to objectives, at least for bombers), is that with one life, it's always easier to deathmatch dogfight to achieve victory instead of bombing the objectives.

So, I picked this up for Star Citizen and No Man's Sky later on... not the best stick, but I haven't used one since Flight Simulator 2. Makes me feel old, lol.

I'd like some games to polish my flight skills, even if they're not space sims... WT a good option? Obviously the dynamics are different, but looking for some nice realism.

I play WT with a mouse because if you plan with a stick you are at a disadvantage in all but the most realistic mode (where a joystick is required).
